Looking to beautify your Android icons. I tested out a large number of custom icons packs and found the best you can find anywhere .

MIUI v5

Based on the custom icons available in MIUI fork of Android, MIUI v5 ranks highly among the best of the Android launchers. It includes an extraordinarily large icon library, at over 200 – huge for a free app.

Unthemed icons: MIUI v5 applies one of my favorite design templates to unthemed icons. It increases the size of icons, applying a crop and boxes each icon with a solid colored background. There’s actually a lot of MIUI v5 variants out there – of these, this particular app provides the best template to unthemed icons.
Aesthetics: The aesthetics of MIUI v5 are great for wallpapers with brighter colors. While not as simplistic as the Holo themed icons, MIUI v5’s visual style includes a fair amount of subtlety and texture. While not appropriate for a darker wallpaper, it still looks good against almost any background.
Number of icons: Out of the 25 icons on the first page of my app drawer, an astounding 19 were custom themed. And these looked great.

Holo Icons

Holo Icons, like Mianogen, uses the Holo design aesthetic in its icons. The work is quite beautiful and meshes well with unthemed icons.

Unthemed icons: Holo Icons does not apply a template to the bulk of other icons.
Aesthetics: Compared to the other packs, Holo Icons look amazing. Relative to the other free icons, Holo Icons uses a slightly less minimal style.
Number of icons: I didn’t get an exact count of Holo Icons’ icons, but out of the 25 icons on the first page of my app drawer, ten were custom themed.

GSeth

Next up is an icon dev named GSeth. Included in GSeth’s repertoire are some fun packs like Circlons, Vion, Vibion, Ruggy, Ruggon, and Viby. The icons themselves are insanely highly rated and most present with a more sophisticated and minimal look than many others although you can find some fun designs among the various packs. GSeth does do some interesting ones though, like Rugo which is a crumpled paper and dirt style which looks awesome.

Elegance

The Elegance theme is one of the best looking free icon packs around. Its template for unthemed icons looks fantastic.

Unthemed icons: Elegance applies one of the most colorful and well-designed template modifications to unthemed apps. It adds a rounded box, with a colorful background, to each icon. The color of the rounded box varies depending on the color composition of the icon.
Aesthetics: Elegance uses a unique visual style. I compare it to MIUI’s design, which uses rounded boxes to give its icons a uniform appearance. For theming, Elegance provides a very uniform appearance on lighter, brighter colored wallpapers.
Number of icons: Out of the 25 icons on the front page of my app drawer, 11 were custom drawn. Although, considering the great job Elegance does with applying templates to unthemed icons, it’s a little hard telling the difference between custom and themed icons.

Hooolm

Hooolm is an icon pack developer and it turns out that Hooolm is a pretty good icon pack dev. Hooolm seems to enjoy doing glass-style icons and that’s most pronounced with the Smoke and Glass, Spatial Glass, and Tinted Glass icon packs. Unlike many, Hoolm doesn’t shy away from doing 3D icons, but still manages to keep them classy and sophisticated. They’re definitely worth a look.

Kovdev

Kovdev is a unique developer. He doesn’t have too many icon packs but it seems like whatever Kovdev releases gets put in the headlines. As one of the few devs that have had an icon pack go viral, you can imagine what kind of quality you’re looking at. The big ones by Kovdev are Nox, Domo, Stark, and Lumos. Nox is sharp and modern while Lumos is softer and muted and Domo is a marriage of complexity and simplicity. Stark is a newer icon pack that features hard squares and vibrant colors. All of them have nearly 2000 icons and there are others by Kovdev if you want to check them out.

Sikebo

Another icon pack developer is sikebo. S/he has done a variety of awesome icon packs including Matertialistik, Retrorika, and fl3D. Materialistik is, as you probably expected, based on Material Design and has a ton of colorful icons. Retrorika still follows the Material Design theme, but uses muted colors and retro color combinations to give your home screens a vintage look. The fl3D icon pack is unique in that it’s a 3D icon pack which is rare these days, but it looks sharp. The prices vary but most of them are either free or $0.99.

DCikonZ

I consider DCikonZ’s larger portfolio of icons and themes as one of the finest in the Play Store, paid or not. On the other hand, its dark design feels aesthetically incongruous with my lighter wallpaper.

Unthemed icons: DCikonZ applies the absolute best template theme to unthemed icons.
Aesthetics: DCikonZ’s minimal, dark, low-contrast colors don’t go well with colorful backgrounds. However, for darker wallpapers, there’s no better free icon pack.
Number of icons: It’s difficult telling DCikonZ’s custom icons away from his template-applied icons.

SixtyFour ThirtyTwo

SixtyFour ThirtyTwo is an icon pack developer that tries to think outside of the box. Most developers have a flat, Material Design inspired icon pack and this dev really doesn’t. The best ones are Min, Minoir, and Redux. Min and Minoir are minimalist icons that keep things small and out of the way with the only difference being that Min is white while Minoir is black. Redux is in development (at the time of this writing), but is showing a lot of promise with muted colors and unique combinations. Most icon packs are either free or $1.00.

Stealthychief

Stealthychief has a number of themes and icon packs out there for a variety of platforms including most launchers, GO Keyboard, and icon packs. Stealthychief generally goes with more obscure stuff like the Aloha icon pack which adds a bit of tropical flair to your icons. However, there is a selection of monotone icons in a couple of colors as well as more popular designs like metal, gold, wood, platinum, and others. Browsing through Stealthychief’s app list is a veritable crap shoot of styles and ideas and that’s what makes it so enjoyable.

Tha PHLASH

Tha PHLASH is one of the most iconic icon pack developers out there and it’s because most of his packs are ridiculous and memorable. You can buy Tha PHLASH’s icons two ways. There is the Google Play collection (click the button below) or you can go to his official icon website to pick them up there too. They are some flashy and sophisticated icons and would do well to fit any theme.

Vertumus

Vertumus has a ton of icon packs but the highlights include Umbra, Elun, Cryten, Vopor, and Rewun. Actually, pretty much everything Vertumus releases rocks a 4.7 rating on Google Play or higher so you can’t go wrong with anything. You’ll find pretty much whatever you’re looking for whether it’s colorful and vibrant, muted and flat, and even shapeless designed icons. It’s good work, check it out!

How to Apply Custom Icons

For most launchers, applying icon pack theme requires only a couple steps. In the easily customizable Nova Launcher, adding an icon pack means either firing up the launcher itself or from the homescreen going to “Nova Settings” -> “Look and Feel” -> “Icon Theme” and then selecting the icon theme pack that you already installed.

Another method of applying a custom theme is by opening the theme’s app. While some custom themes do not allow this, many do. Just fire the app up and for most icon packs, tap on your launcher. These icon packs frequently require either Apex, GO, ADW or Nova.
