After years of rumors and leaks, its finally made official. Foldable smartphones were in rumors and in development for many years, with each passing year suggesting that we will have them year or by the end of this year. Samsung has finally announced Samsung Galaxy Fold at its event on 20 Feb, just before the MWC 2019. We now have a name for foldable Galaxy.
Samsung announced about its Galaxy Fold on the stage but it was not shown as a demo, and not even physically. Samsung just unveiled its specs and price on stage. First it was to go on sale on 26th April but due to display issues, it was delayed to September.
The announcement of this device has proved that Samsung and Asia are way ahead of Apple and Europe or America. Other foldable smartphones announced at MWC 2019 mainly by Huawei is Mate X.
Let’s get into the details of this future of smartphone.
Samsung Galaxy Fold Display & Design
Samsung Galaxy Fold is made up of two screens, one is 7.3 inches that stretches when you open it up to become a tablet and other is 4.7 inches on the outside. The larger screen is Infinity Flex Display and we don’t know anything about smaller one.
Basically, it is hybrid of smartphone and tablet. The Infinity Flex Display is made of a polymer and it is thinner than any other mobile display, because it is made to fold thousand times.
The fold is made of a hinge having multiple interlocking gears that is hidden in casing. It’s hard to tell exactly how flat the Fold folds, but from what we can see, there’s at least a small gap at the hinge end. These hinges allow to transform from tablet to phone. Samsung says it’s able to fold at least 200,000 times, which works out to over 5 years if you fold it 100 times a day and you would not fold it 100 times a day.
Other Notable Features
Samsung Galaxy Fold has triple camera system that are 16-megapixel ultra-wide, alongside 12-megapixel wide-angle and telephoto cameras at the rear, and a 10-megapixel cover camera for selfies.
Samsung is using 512 GB Universal Flash Storage 3.0 (eUFS) for fast speeds, alongside a Qualcomm Snapdragon 7nm octa-core processor and 12 GB of RAM.
Samsung has built two batteries for Samsung Galaxy Fold, that are separated by the fold but combined in the Android operating system to represent a total of 4380 mAh.
There will be four colors of Galaxy Fold.
Samsung Galaxy Fold allows to run three apps at once on this Android device, and it’s using an app continuity system to adjust these apps when you move between tablet and phone modes. Apps like WhatsApp, Microsoft Office, and YouTube have all been optimized for the new display and modes, and Samsung has been working with Google to ensure Android 9 Pie fully supports this display.
There will be both LTE and 5G models of Samsung Galaxy Fold.
Price & Release Date
The Samsung galaxy Fold is priced at $1980. Available for purchase from September 2019.
